Drone


From the start, I had decided I wanted to create a simple, minimalistic design for my drone. The sphere at the centre was meant to be eyeball like, with the blue stripe down the side acting as the eye or viewport. The rings around the eye I thought of as "wings", part of the system that allowed it to float according to some sci-fi mechanics. The writing at the side of the drone is a Latin phrase that appears on the HUD as well. The idea behind it was that it would be similar to a tattoo in a way, a statement the conscience operating the drone wanted to broadcast and show off to the world around it. The drone was animated and textured in Maya (2020).

HUD


The HUD originally had more features, like a spinning ring in the middle for example (the sort of thing you would expect to see on a robotic heads up display), but to make it fit in line with my drone design, I decided it would be more interesting to make it look more simple and angular. The bar at the bottom represents how much power the drone has left, and the one at the top ---. I think having the two curved bars at opposite sides of the screen, on both the top and the bottom, ended up creating the sense that it was focusing in on something in the centre even without a spinning ring to highlight it or a crosshair in the middle. Again, the Latin text reappeared here, along with spinning rectangles to represent the wings moving past the viewpoint of the drone. I considered adding a filter to the HUD to make either the footage it was viewing or the HUD itself coloured or changed in some way, but I thought the effect created was a little out of place, and so I decided to leave it as is. The HUD was designed and animated in Adobe After Effects. 

Matte Painting


The matte painting went through many different iterations. At first, I wanted to make it fit in with Joshua's concept, and make a more traditional fantasy setting, but I don't think it looked very good. My second attempt was closer to my own concept, but that too looked odd and out of place. I think this version looks pretty good for the amount of time I did it in, and both the colour scheme and objects in it fit well with the other visual effects I used. The matte painting was created in Photoshop.
